On March 1st, the second day of Operation Epic Fury, an Iranian drone struck a tactical operations center in Kuwait, killing six US Army Reserve service members and wounding more than 20 others. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth publicly described the drone as an "anomalous squirter" that slipped through a fortified position. Survivors told CBS News a very different story.
Soldiers say the unit was placed in small tin buildings with makeshift offices, protected by nothing more than thin vertical blast barricades with no overhead cover. One injured soldier said the position was about as weak as it gets from a bunker standpoint. The unit had no meaningful air defense capability, and soldiers had already seen intelligence indicating the post was on a list of known Iranian targets. Some had questions about why they were moved closer to Iran rather than to safer locations like Jordan or Saudi Arabia, where other troops were sent.
When the drone detonated in the middle of the soldiers' work site, the scene was described as chaos. Soldiers reported head wounds, shrapnel injuries, perforated eardrums, and heavy bleeding. There was no organized triage line. Assistant Secretary of Defense Shawn Parnell pushed back on CBS reporting, claiming every possible measure was taken and pointing to six-foot walls as evidence of fortification. Survivors disputed that characterization directly. One soldier said accountability matters not to attack the Army, but because the unit will not learn from these mistakes if they pretend the mistakes did not happen.
