Taylor Lorenz published an investigative article in Wired about Chorus, a network of liberal content creators receiving funding from the 1630 Fund without proper disclosure. The backlash was immediate and vicious, with prominent creators attacking Lorenz's credibility and character. Hawk defended her reporting and faced similar attacks from the left despite his own progressive politics.
Five months later, the Wired article remains live with no retractions or corrections. No lawsuits have been filed. Chorus still hasn't released their creator contracts. The reporting was accurate, yet creators like Brian Tyler Cohen and others mobilized their audiences against Lorenz rather than addressing the transparency concerns.
Recent reporting confirms over half the 1630 Fund money comes from five billionaire donors. These wealthy benefactors don't fund content out of altruism but to advance their interests. The creators weren't being fed talking points because they already aligned with Democratic Party messaging, making them valuable assets for billionaire influence operations.
The hostile response from liberal creators reveals an uncomfortable truth about left-wing media. When progressive voices question Democratic Party alignment or demand transparency about funding sources, they face coordinated attacks from supposed allies.
The same people who criticize right-wing misinformation engaged in character assassination rather than honest discussion about disclosure ethics. Hawk's politics remain left of the Democratic Party establishment, but the experience exposed how intolerant parts of the online left have become toward dissent. Content creators who signed agreements limiting their editorial independence attacked journalists for revealing those arrangements. The irony is staggering, and the vindication is complete.
