The Department of Government Efficiency has officially ceased to exist after failing to achieve any of its stated goals. Despite Elon Musk's ambitious promise to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget, federal spending for 2025 will actually exceed 2024 levels. The Trump administration's DOGE initiative, which operated without Senate confirmation, had zero measurable impact on reducing government spending.
The most devastating consequence of DOGE came from the elimination of USAID, a decades-old organization responsible for projecting American soft power globally. USAID had saved 92 million lives over the past 20 years by providing medicine, vaccines, and food to impoverished communities and refugee camps worldwide. The New Yorker recently documented how the USAID shutdown has already resulted in 600,000 deaths this year, with 60% of those victims being children.
Young staffers recruited by Musk, including figures like Big Balls, stormed federal offices to terrorize employees and initiate mass firings. The entire operation exemplified the administration's incompetence and dangerous buffoonery. There was no voter constituency demanding USAID's elimination, no congressional support for its termination, yet Marco Rubio and the Trump administration proceeded anyway.
The consequences extend beyond the immediate death toll. Criminal prosecution immunity only protects Donald Trump, leaving Elon Musk and his young recruits potentially vulnerable to future legal action. The question remains whether a future Democratic administration will have the courage to hold these officials accountable for their actions, unlike the approach taken by Merrick Garland.
