The country experienced another weekend of shocking violence, from the shooting at Brown University to the antisemitic terrorist attack at Bondi Beach where a heroic civilian disarmed a gunman. Rob Reiner and his wife were murdered by their son, a tragedy Trump immediately exploited on Truth Social by blaming Reiner's "Trump derangement syndrome" for his own death. Trump's response demonstrates the depths of his mental illness and complete lack of humanity as president.
The FBI arrested four people in Los Angeles connected to a radical pro Palestinian organization allegedly planning to plant multiple bombs at businesses on New Year's Eve. Questions remain about whether this represents genuine terrorism or another FBI entrapment operation. The timing couldn't be worse, as the Trump administration has declared Antifa a domestic terror organization despite it not existing as an organization, while FBI officials claim the left represents the primary domestic terrorist threat.
This administration will weaponize the Los Angeles bombing plot to justify further erosion of civil liberties and civil rights in their authoritarian agenda. Whether the arrested individuals were entrapped by FBI confidential informants or actually planned violence as misguided freedom fighters, the damage is done. Right wing media and the Trump administration will capitalize on this to double down on targeting the left while immigrant communities face brutalization by ICE officers and Customs and Border Patrol.
The violence in America and around the world, from Sudan to Congo to Gaza, feels like a tidal wave of inhumanity. Mental health and gratitude for peaceful moments become essential survival tools as the country faces what promises to be an even worse year ahead under Trump's presidency.
