Stephen Miller's mass deportation campaign has hit significant setbacks, but the agenda driving it remains very much intact. After federal agents killed two Minneapolis residents, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, within two weeks of each other in January, public outrage forced a tactical retreat from the city. Miller had set a quota of 3,000 arrests per day, double his earlier demand of 1,500, pushing ICE away from targeted enforcement and into indiscriminate mass roundups that swept up American citizens alongside undocumented immigrants.
Border Patrol Chief Greg Bavino's aggressive tactics, combined with Kristi Noem and Cory Lewandowski encouraging agents to film arrests on personal devices for DHS social media content, backfired badly. Trump's approval rating on immigration sank underwater. Miller's false claim that Alex Pretti was an armed domestic terrorist was quickly disproven by video evidence, further galvanizing public opposition. Tom Homan has since taken over operations, returning ICE to a quieter, more targeted approach focused on immigrants with criminal records. Daily arrests dropped from a goal of 3,000 to roughly 115 per day in February, still four times the Biden-era rate, and 40% of those arrested had no criminal record at all.
Republican Senator Tom Tillis of North Carolina has publicly called for Miller to be fired. Meanwhile, DHS remains partially defunded as Senate Democrats push for ICE and Border Patrol reforms, and Kristi Noem's replacement, Mark Wayne Mullin, is now in line to lead the department.
Hawk argues that the quieter tactics make the operation more dangerous, not less, and that the goal of ethnic cleansing has not changed, only the volume at which it is being carried out.
