Trump declared NATO the enemy on his first anniversary back in office, marking the end of the American-led global order that structured world affairs since 1945. The world didn't realize this reality at first. Europeans thought they could bargain with Trump to maintain the status quo. Russia thought it could manipulate Trump to get Ukraine. China thought it could use Trump's weakness to finally grasp Taiwan. None appreciated that Trump, the Republican Party, and the American people who voted for this were about to demolish the entire geostrategic balance in an unprecedented act of national self-mutilation.
America is witnessing something rare in human history: abdication by the leader of the global order. Trump wants to go from leading the free world to leading the Western Hemisphere, which feels like a downgrade. The presidency, leading the most powerful nation on the planet, voluntarily giving up leadership. The Five Eyes intelligence sharing arrangement is in danger with Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence. NATO has progressed from a mutual defense alliance to what Trump calls the real enemy. The death of NATO means Europe will rearm without American protection.
The world's three largest nuclear powers, Russia, China, and the United States, are now expansionist predator states. Germany, Poland, Canada, Japan, Sweden, Australia, and South Korea may all develop nuclear capabilities. Europe will draw closer to China and supplant the United States as China's main trading partner. Greenland is about to become disputed territory like Crimea or Kashmir. The Republican Party has made an unmistakable territorial claim on Greenland.
This isn't about Trump or Trumpism anymore. This is about the American people voluntarily doing this twice. After January 6th, after 91 indictments, after being adjudicated a rapist, after 34 felony convictions, after the Trump Organization was convicted on 17 fraud-related felony counts, Americans reelected him. This is who we are.
