After six weeks of threats, military strikes, and nuclear saber-rattling, the United States woke up to a ceasefire with Iran that left more questions than answers. Thousands are dead. Thirteen or fourteen U.S. military personnel lost their lives. Iran now controls the Strait of Hormuz and is charging $2 million per ship in tolls, a reality that did not exist six weeks ago. Gas prices are above four dollars a gallon and will stay there.
Hawk examines what the markets have been calling "TACO" — Trump Always Chickens Out — and why this ceasefire is something far more consequential than a simple reversal. The deal widely seen as a win for Iran leaves the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in power, Hezbollah intact, Hamas intact, the Houthis still operating in Yemen, and Iran's missile and drone arsenal untouched.
America's alliances with Europe, Asia, and Australia have been badly damaged. NATO is effectively finished, and a formal U.S. withdrawal may come within months. Pete Hegseth, widely expected to be pushed out in the coming weeks, may be the only notable casualty on the American side.
After threatening nuclear strikes and framing the conflict as an existential fight, the United States achieved none of its stated objectives. The regime survived. The IRGC survived. Iran gained sovereign recognition over a critical global shipping lane.
America First has become America Alone.
