Trump recently called for six Democratic members of Congress to be hanged after they released a video reminding active duty military personnel of their legal obligations under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The six lawmakers, all military veterans including Jason Crow and Mark Kelly, emphasized that service members are legally required to disobey illegal orders and that their oath is to the Constitution, not to any individual.
Trump responded by calling their actions sedition and treason, claiming the reminder was punishable by death. Stephen Miller labeled it an insurrection, while MAGA attorney Mike Davis and Trump's former criminal defense attorney Todd Blanche, now Deputy Director of the Department of Justice, suggested the Congress members should be investigated for their intent. All six Democratic lawmakers are former military personnel familiar with military law and the chain of command.
Given Trump's attempts to use the military against American civilians, the reminder about the Uniform Code of Military Justice and the legal obligation to refuse illegal orders appears entirely appropriate. Active duty members face potential prosecution for criminal acts even if following orders, and Trump remains the only person in the executive branch with immunity granted by the Supreme Court. Military personnel, cabinet members, and White House staff including Stephen Miller and Todd Blanche do not have such immunity. The Trump execution threats against sitting Congress members appear designed to distract from ongoing Epstein files coverage.
