The first, Netanyahu's Very Useful War by Yair Rosenberg, lays out how Benjamin Netanyahu has spent two decades turning personal legal jeopardy into political survival. Netanyahu has been under indictment for fraud and bribery for six years. Without this war, he would be standing trial. His coalition depends on ultra-orthodox Haredi exemptions from Israel's mandatory military draft, a position opposed by 70% of Jewish Israelis and struck down by Israel's Supreme Court. Lose the Haredi, lose the coalition, lose the prime ministership, go to prison.
The second article, The Iranian Regime Doubles Down by Karim Sadjadpour, a Carnegie Endowment scholar and Iranian-born analyst who was expelled from his own country and cannot return, examines Mojtaba Khamenei, the 56-year-old son of the killed Supreme Leader. The Assembly of Experts selected him as the next Supreme Leader, making Iran a hereditary dictatorship. Those who know him describe him as more radical but far less capable than his father, a poor speaker with the stunted interpersonal skills of a dictator's son who has never faced hardship, never spoken publicly, and whose face the Iranian public barely recognizes. His inner circle includes some of the most hardened figures in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Hawk's take: Trump was hoping for a pragmatic capitulator. He may have gotten something far more dangerous.
