The administration announced Iran's military had been completely obliterated — except for their drones, missiles, and sea mines. Trump then demanded NATO allies send their navies to the Persian Gulf to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, threatening to pull the United States out of NATO if they refused. The problem: NATO's Article 5 is a defensive treaty. It obligates member nations to come to each other's defense when attacked by an outside aggressor — not when one member nation starts a war and begins losing it. NATO allies declined, and rightfully so under the treaty's own terms.
