On Easter Sunday, Donald Trump told an interviewer that unless Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz, the United States will bomb the entire country — a nation of 92 million people. Trump's threat targets civilian infrastructure including desalination plants, power plants, and water treatment facilities, all of which are recognized war crimes under international law.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has repeatedly used the phrase "no quarter," a term referring to the killing of captives rather than taking them prisoner — itself a war crime. Critics on both the left and right have responded. Marjorie Taylor Greene stated Hegseth has lost his mind. Ann Coulter publicly said the administration is advocating war crimes. Even within the military, senior advisers warned Trump and Hegseth before the conflict escalated that attacking Iran would trigger strikes on Gulf allies including Bahrain, the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia — which has happened.
Iran has struck U.S. aircraft parked at a Saudi military base and has taken out roughly 20 to 25 percent of the UAE's natural gas production capacity. The Strait of Hormuz is now closed to ships bound for the U.S. and Israel, while other nations are reportedly paying Iran a toll of around two million dollars per vessel to pass through — at over 120 ships per day. Gas prices are already up over a dollar a gallon since the war began, and Hawk warns they could hit ten dollars a gallon by the Fourth of July if the situation continues to escalate.
