Donald Trump's trip to Beijing has raised serious questions about who is actually in control. Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping for over two hours inside the Great Hall of the People, and what came out of it was telling. Reports describe Trump as disoriented and shaken after the meeting. When asked by reporters about their talks, Trump called China "beautiful" and praised Xi as "a great leader," saying he always tells the truth, whatever that means. Meanwhile, Chinese state media confirmed Xi warned Trump that Taiwanese independence is incompatible with peace across the Taiwan Strait.
Western press was largely kept out. The US press pool was told they would not be allowed to broadcast in real time, and apparently that was just accepted. CBS News anchor Tony Dokoupil couldn't even get a visa to enter the country. Trump stayed off Truth Social and ignored shouted questions from reporters, uncharacteristically tight-lipped throughout. Body language analysts watching the footage noted Trump grasping Xi's hand, patting it, showing an unusual level of deference toward the Chinese president, behavior Hawk compares directly to how Trump acts around Vladimir Putin.
The trip also included Brett Ratner, the Hollywood director who was effectively banished from the industry in 2017 following multiple sexual misconduct and sexual assault allegations. Ratner's name appears extensively in the Jeffrey Epstein files. He reportedly earned his spot on Air Force One by directing the Melania documentary, a project backed by Jeff Bezos. Hawk calls the rehabilitation of Brett Ratner by both Trump and Bezos appalling. Also in the delegation: Tim Cook, Marco Rubio, Eric Trump, and roughly 15 to 20 CEOs there for business access.
