Democrats flipped a solidly Republican Georgia state house seat in a special election, marking the 25th Democratic pickup nationwide in 2025 with zero Republican victories in special and off-year elections. The Georgia results continue a pattern where Democrats are outperforming 2022 presidential results by an average of more than 13 points across 60+ special elections. This margin matters because approximately 35 House Republicans won their 2024 elections by less than 13 points, putting those seats in play for the 2026 midterms.
In Miami, Democrat Eileen Higgins defeated Trump-backed Republican Amelio Gonzalez in a runoff election for mayor, becoming the first Democrat to hold the position since 1997. Higgins won decisively with 59% of the vote compared to Gonzalez's 40%, an impressive 19-point margin in the technically nonpartisan race. Out of Miami's 450,000 residents, approximately 36,000 voters participated, with Higgins receiving 21,550 votes to Gonzalez's 14,799.
These special election victories in Georgia and Miami demonstrate significant momentum heading into the 2026 midterm elections. Political analysts expect the House races to heavily favor Democrats, with predictions that 30 to 40 additional House Republicans may resign, retire, or choose not to seek reelection before 2026. The consistent Democratic overperformance in special elections throughout 2025 suggests a substantial shift in voter sentiment that could reshape the political landscape.
