Why Buttercup the Snake Stays in San Francisco While I'm in the Sierras

Buttercup, a 16-year-old Brazilian rainbow boa constrictor, remains in San Francisco while her owner settles into a new mountain cabin in the Sierras at 5000 feet elevation. The decision to delay moving the snake centers on winter preparedness and the lack of a backup generator at the property. Despite unseasonably warm December temperatures reaching 68 degrees in the mountains, experience suggests harsh winter weather from mid-January through mid-March lies ahead.

Power outages during Sierra winter storms pose serious risks for reptiles requiring consistent heat lamps and temperature control. The contrast between mountain and coastal California climates becomes apparent when temperatures drop from 68 degrees at elevation to 44 degrees in southern Marin County on the same day. A generator installation planned for spring will eventually allow the Brazilian rainbow boa to make the transition safely.

The snake, acquired as a baby nearly 17 years ago and roughly twice the length of a pencil at the time, now requires careful consideration for relocation. Mountain cabin ownership brings unique challenges for exotic pet care, particularly reptiles dependent on electrical heating systems. Winter preparedness and generator backup become essential infrastructure for maintaining proper snake habitat in remote Sierra locations prone to weather-related power loss.
