The battle of Monte Cassino began in January 1944, when the Allies launched an amphibious landing at Anzio, to the west of Monte Cassino. The final battle of Monte Cassino was fought in May 1944, and was successful, with the Allies finally capturing the monastery. The Germans retreated to new defensive positions further north, and the Allies were able to advance towards Rome.
