Over the years, they have continued to struggle for self-determination, often facing repression and violence at the hands of the governments of various Middle Eastern countries that emerged from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire.

Despite the fact that the Ottoman Empire no longer exists, its legacy continues to shape the political and cultural landscape of the Middle East. The events of World War I and the subsequent dismantling of the Ottoman state remain a key part of the region's collective memory, and the Ottomans themselves are still remembered as a significant force in the history of the Middle East.
