German troops took two untested units of the U.S. Army's 106th Infantry Division guarding a forested ridge called Schnee Eifel by surprise when they launched the Battle of the Bulge on December 16, 1944. What followed was a fierce battle that ended with the largest mass surrender of U.S. troops in the war’s European theater.
