2: Word About Context: We derive Biblical Interpretation from any verse by reading the words around it. Mostly what comes before and once in a while, what comes after. That’s how we find Biblical meaning to a text. We ask these questions 1) Who is speaking? 2) What is the topic about? 3) Who is the speaker addressing? 4) What just happened or is about to happen? 5) Where are they? 6) what is the historical social situation at the moment this event is occurring? That is what CONTEXT means.
Let’s look at the very first time Jesus makes the statement about forgiving others. It is in Mathew 6:14-15. But we need to back up and see what the topic/subject/context is – You have to start at 5:1-2 to see that it is Jesus talking and he’s speaking to the crowds on the mountain. “Disciples” they are called at the beginning of his sermon but the term “crowd” is used to describe them when he’s finished his sermon at the end of chapter 7
5:1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
Let’s now look at when we see his first ever mention of this phrase in the New Testament.
Mathew 6:5-14. 5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.’ 14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. So – the subject, the topic, the CONTEXT of this statement is indeed Jesus’ teaching on prayer.
3: Based on those calling me out as a heretic, liar, false teacher, or unfit to be called pastor.
About me: I do indeed pastor a church. I prefer my congregation and I be on a first name basis and so I don’t demand to be addressed as pastor. But technically, I am officially a Reverend, because I am a licensed and ordained minister from a denominational body. But I never use that title. To get that, I had to first obtain a bachelor’s degree in history, then a graduate degree in ministry and finally a Master’s Degree in Divinity from a Seminary. That’s like getting a law degree except it’s for pastors. Over the years in ministering to those who have been beaten, abused, molested, raped and or had loved ones killed due to other’s negligence, I had to examine this question a lot. I devoured 3-4 books on just the topic of forgiveness by smarter theologians and practiced Christian counselors. I read 8-10 books on inner healing and demonic deliverance from people with advanced degrees and years of practice. I keep more than a dozen commentaries on my shelves from some of the brightest theologians of the last two centuries and consult them regularly for understanding.
