reaction to this song? Do you think someone ought to earn the right to sing it?
2. Read: Matt 15:21-28 and Mark 7:24–30
3. Why is Jesus in Tyre and Sidon? What do you think he is planning, what are his motives to be there?
4. The term Canaanites are an ethnic heritage, a territorial region, and a description of behavior.
● The First Mention of Canaan is in Genesis 9:24-25 – The son of Ham is cursed by Noah
● The clan from Canaan Settled Modern Israel/Lebanon/Syria/TransJordan in Gen. 10:19
● About 400 years later in Genesis 11:31 Abram is called to the land of Canaan.
● More than 450 years after that in Numbers 13:29 12 spies give a report that Canaanites are a kind
of people in a specific territory.
5. Read Leviticus 18, especially 24-27 – Why is does God tell Israel to not be like the Canaanites
6. Do you think this Canaan woman who comes to Jesus is - an ethnicity, regional location, or a type of
morality? Is there anything in the text of either Matthew or Mark to support your view?
7. “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David!” how do you understand the way she addressed Jesus?
8. How do the Apostles respond to her? What do you think they were thinking and feeling in this situation?
9. Matthew 15:25 - she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” Do you think people need to
earn the right to ask Jesus for help? What are your thoughts about the entire “dog” discussion between
this woman and Jesus (verse 26).
10. In both the Matthew and Mark passages that tell this story; it ends with Jesus doing more miracles
among people. What is the connection in your opinion?
11. Have you ever been an unwelcome outsider? Have you ever experienced someone who wasn’t
welcome in your social or spiritual fellowship because they didn’t measure up to the standards?
12. What does Jesus require of us to give us his help? Do you think there is a minimum standard?
