In this video Heimler explores the history of Walt Disney's idea to build Disneyland, and later Disney World.
Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955. But understanding the historical context of its opening helps shed light on why this park was so universally embraced and cherished by Americans.
Disneyland opened in the midst of a nation in turmoil. We were in the throes of the Cold War, the fear of immanent nuclear war, McCarthyism and the looming threat of communism, racial tension surrounding the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. the Board of Education, and on and on.
Into all of this chaos stepped Walt Disney with an idea that would revolutionize America: a utopian park built to provide guests with an otherworldly experience of peace and rest.
Other videos focus on the history of Disney parks in terms of rides and construction. This video exists to explain what exactly Walt Disney MEANT by all these attractions.
