In this video Heimler walks through Unit 8 topic 1 (8.1) of AP World History. Really it's just the setting of the stage for two major global processes that occurred in the twentieth century: the Cold War and decolonization.

With respect to the Cold War, two superpowers emerged on the world stage after World War II had ceased: the United States and the Soviet Union. There were deep seeds of mistrust sown between the two powers and that mistrust would lead to a more than forty year conflict between them, though they never fired any shorts directly at each other.

With respect to decolonization, recall that by 1918 colonization around the world had reached its peak. Colonial soldiers fought in both World Wars on behalf of their parent countries and it was during this time because of the devastating toll taken on the imperial powers by the war that colonies began seeking their independence.
