In this video Heimler walks you through the oft criticized, oft praised policy of affirmative action which covers the content for Unit 3 Topic 13 of the AP Government curriculum.
What is affirmative action? It's a set of policies that address discrimination by actively seeking minorities to fill certain positions, whether they be employment positions or college admissions. Advocates of affirmative action believe that even though laws have been passed against discrimination, discrimination will still occur if it is not fought against actively with things like racial quotas.
The Supreme Court has ruled in several decisions about affirmative action, and although they have never struck it down in principle, they have narrowed the possibilities of its application, as they did for example in Regents v. Bakke. At the heart of this debate is a single question: is the Constitution colorblind?
