He started with his own daughter, telling her at 13 or 14 that God had commanded him to marry her. Then he expanded across Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and Nebraska, telling followers he received direct impressions from Heavenly Father and that obedience to him was tied to their salvation.
Parents believed him. Some handed over their daughters willingly. By 2022 he had taken at least 20 so-called spiritual wives. At least ten were minors. Some as young as nine.
He called it the atonement. The federal charges called it something else entirely.
