A verdict has been reached in the Derek Chauvin trial. Chauvin is the former Minneapolis police officer accused of murder in the death of George Floyd.after deliberating for four hours on Monday (April 19) and resumed deliberating today. Judge Peter Cahill read the verdict, which found Chauvin guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.
Chauvin, 45, previously pled not guilty to the charges in George Floyd's death on May 25, 2020. He was facing up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, up to 25 years for third-degree murder, and up to 10 years for second-degree manslaughter. He will be sentenced in 8 weeks.
While many witnesses took the stand during the trial, Chauvin invoked his fifth amendment right to take the stand.
