18:45Now PlayingRackboy Cam, a New Jersey rapper, has been awarded $1.7 million in a long-running legal battle over similarities between his 2016 song "Everything Be Lit" (released by YFN Lucci in Atlanta and Philadelphia rapper PnB Rock).
Rackboy Cam, a Paterson native, announced Thursday's conclusion to the legal case via an Instagram post.
The original song was originally released by the independent rapper months prior to YFN Lucci. A more well-known artist with an Atlanta record label, YFN LUCI, put out a single which became a Billboard Hot 100 Hit in 2017. It reached No. 37 was at the top of the chart.
The lawsuit was filed in Georgia in U.S District Court in 2018. It centers around similarities between the choruses in the two songs. You can hear it below. Maino, a Brooklyn rapper, sings the chorus to Rackboy Cam's song. (Note: The songs have explicit lyrics.
Although the songs were in different key keys, Judge Charles A. Pannell Jr. was convinced to issue a default judgement in Rackboy Cam’s favor.
Rackboy Cam was awarded $1.445 Million under the terms of the judgement. Rackboy Cam also received writer's credits for royalties of 50% per year from both YFN Luccie (PnB Rock) NJ Advance Media reported that he was also awarded pre-judgment interests of 6.25% over the three-year period following the filing of the lawsuit.
