YouTube Description
as posted by the channel21 Savage, an Atlanta rapper, surrendered to authorities Thursday night. He was accused of drug and weapon possession in connection to a well-publicized incident that occurred in early 2019, when Georgia immigration officials arrested him.
He was released from bond on Thursday evening.
The rapper, whose real identity is She'yaa bin Abraham-Joseph was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers February 3, 2019. After international media attention, he was released on bond. ICE officials informed local media at the time that the rapper was convicted in 2014 of felony drug offenses. His lawyers claimed that the information was false and pointed out that the conviction was later overturned. An aggravated felony accusation was dropped by ICE officers against him at immigration court.
A warrant was signed by a local magistrate court to authorize his arrest for felony drug possession and weapons possess in Dekalb County. The rapper surrendered on Thursday evening. He will be performing alongside J. Cole on Friday's Miami leg of his tour.
His lawyers claim that he didn't know about the warrant. It was issued by DeKalb County officials on Sep. 7 and was due to expire Thursday. According to the warrant, the rapper was accused of throwing out a glass bottle that contained liquid that later tested positive for codeine. A handgun was also found in the vehicle.
According to Charles Kuck (managing partner at Kuck Baxter Immigration), who represents the rapper, deportation proceedings have been pursued by the government since the night of his arrest.
Kuck stated that he believes the arrest was made at ICE officials' request. The agency officials didn't respond to Thursday night's requests for comment.
Kuck stated in a statement that the warrant appeared to be sought by ICE because it was issued on the eve ICE's Immigration Court hearing in Mr. Joseph’s deportation proceeding. It is based on events that occurred over two and one-half years ago when ICE arrested Mr. Joseph.
