8:42Now PlayingMutulu Shakur, 71-year-old incarcerated activist, stepfather to 2pac, and former Black Liberation Army member, could die in as little as three months, according to medical professionals and attorneys pushing for his "emergency" release from prison.
Mutulu, who suffers from a "terminal, incurable case of multiple myeloma," as well as bone marrow cancer, was given six months to live back in late May, his attorneys wrote in court papers. They've asked a federal judge to release him to his son, Mopreme Shakur, in a move that's opposed by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Now, Mutulu's freedom is once again in the hands of U.S. District Judge Charles S. Haight, who denied his petition for release in November 2020. But back then, Haight signaled his willingness to reconsider, writing, "should it develop that Shakur’s condition deteriorates further, to the point of approaching death, he may apply again to the Court, for a release that in those circumstances could be justified as 'compassionate.'"
Mutulu's family members say that in addition to his declining physical health, he has shown signs of confusion. Mopreme wrote a sworn statement stating that his father failed to tell him and his brother Tyrone apart, even though, "Tyrone is taller than me and has long dreadlocks, while I currently have...a shaven bald head."
"I am pleading with you, Your Honor. Please let me bring him home so my wife and I can take care of him through his final days," Mopreme wrote.
Mutulu was convicted of involvement in plots to commit robberies totaling $2.5 million, in which an armored car secured guard and two Nyack policemen were murdered. He has spent 36 years in federal prison. Several family members of the victims have written letters to Haight forcefully opposing Mutulu's release.
The final written arguments are due on July 29, meaning that Haight's decision will likely come sometime in August, court records show.
