Composer Joseph Haydn has two skulls. After his funeral, two men showed up and bribed the gravedigger to dig up the corpse, cut off his head, and hand it over so that after vomiting in their carriage from the smell, they could study the bumps on his head and see the source of his musical genius. You see, they were phrenologists, which is kind of like being an astrology girl if instead of tabloids and crystals you had a collection of human skulls. Years later, when Haydn’s remains were to be transferred, his old patron was furious to discover that the man had no head and immediately knew who was to blame. But when he came to take it back, one of the men had hidden the skull inside of his mattress and told his wife to lay under the covers the entire time. She explained to her visitors she would love to greet them properly, but she was busy menstruating right onto the bed, as one does. So they tore up the entire house, but refused to go anywhere near that mattress. Instead, the skull-thief offered them somebody else’s noggin and they put it back with the body. Haydn’s skull passed from person to person over the years, until in 1954 the real thing was finally put back with the rest of him. Along with the other skull, which is just kind of there now.
