Was butt stuff responsible for the dissolution of Yugoslavia? No, seriously. It’s 1985, Big Brother Tito is dead, ethnic tensions are rising, and a Serbian farmer named Đorđe Martinović arrives in a Kosovo hospital with a broken glass bottle where the sun don’t shine. Doctors ‘investigated’ the incident and found that the wound was very likely self-inflicted during a private moment gone wrong. But that’s not what Đorđe told the hospital when he arrived. He claimed it was a couple of Albanian men who overpowered him and inserted the bottle against his wishes. Serbian nationalists were quick to leap to his defense. Đorđe, they said, was a martyr of ethnic violence. The incident becomes Exhibit A in the rise of Slobodan Milošević, and within a few years Yugoslavia has turned on itself in a bloody deluge of ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity, and genocide. The spark that lit the deadliest European conflict since WWII might have been one man forgetting a flared base.
