Originally a traditional French Carol, the O Holy Night we know and love today was penned by composer Adolphe Adam, best known in his day for writing operas and the famous ballet Giselle. Originally written in 1847 with the title 'Minuit, Chrétiens' (Midnight, Christians), the music became so sensationally popular that by 1864 the Revue de Musique Sacrée wrote:

"….it might be a good thing to discard this piece whose popularity is becoming unhealthy. It is sung in the streets, social gatherings, and at bars with live entertainment. It becomes debased and degenerated. The best would be to let it go its own way, far from houses of religion, which can do very well without it."

Nevertheless, the overwhelming beauty of the song, and especially the virtuosity required to sing its highest notes, continued to entice and endear listeners over the years, and it remains both one of the most requested hymns in liturgical as well as secular contexts.
