The story of the Mafia series begins in Sicily during the early 20th century, explored in Mafia: The Old Country. We see the harsh realities of life under Mafia influence and how crime touches families at a very young age. One of those children is Vito Scaletta, whose experiences in Sicily shape his outlook before he and his family eventually emigrate to America.

The narrative then shifts to the 1930s in Mafia: Definitive Edition (a remake of the original). Tommy Angelo, a working-class taxi driver, is unexpectedly drawn into the Salieri crime family. What begins as a chance encounter grows into a new way of life as Tommy takes on dangerous jobs, climbs the ranks, and witnesses firsthand the rewards—and costs—of being part of organized crime during the Prohibition era.

The next chapter takes place in the 1940s and 1950s in Empire Bay, told in Mafia II. Vito Scaletta returns home from World War II and quickly finds himself pulled into the city’s underworld alongside his childhood friend Joe Barbaro. Together, they rise within the ranks of the Mafia, enjoying the wealth and power that come with their new lifestyle, but also discovering how unstable and treacherous that world can be.

Mafia II is expanded through three additional stories. In The Betrayal of Jimmy, players see the criminal underworld through the eyes of Jimmy, a trusted fixer, as he navigates jobs that test his loyalty and skills. Jimmy’s Vendetta continues his journey with action-driven missions against rival gangs and corrupt forces. Meanwhile, Joe’s Adventures follows Joe Barbaro during an important stretch of time that connects with Vito’s story, revealing more about Joe’s character and his role in the larger world of Empire Bay.

By the late 1960s, the series shifts to New Bordeaux in Mafia III. The game follows Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam War veteran who returns home searching for a new beginning but instead becomes locked in a bloody conflict with the city’s ruling crime family. Determined to create his own criminal empire, Lincoln builds alliances with various underbosses—one of whom is an older, battle-worn Vito Scaletta, still navigating the dangerous life he first embraced decades earlier.

Told in this order, the Mafia series unfolds as a generational saga of organized crime, beginning with the Mafia’s roots in Sicily, moving through Prohibition-era America, then into the post-war years of the 1940s and 50s, and finally reaching the turbulent 1960s. Across each era, the series highlights the allure of power, the weight of loyalty, and the heavy cost that comes with living outside the law.
