Latvia shared the same fate as Estonia and Lithuania in 1939 when it was put under the Soviet sphere of influence with the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. In 1941 the nazis took the country and at the end of the Second World War the Soviets were back. The country would remain part of the Soviet Union until 1991.
