as posted by the channelThe history of Belarus is not very well known. People sometimes ask: are Russia and Belarus the same? The answer is no. Belarus is an independent country since 1990. Before that it was part of the Soviet Union as the so-called: Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic. This SSR got extended by a piece of the Second Polish Republic the Soviets took in September 1939 when the Nazi invasion of Poland had started. This was due to the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, a treaty of non-aggression between Germany and the Soviet Union. Yet, Hitler violated the treaty. On the 22nd of June 1941 Nazi Germany started Operation Barbarossa. It was a full scale invasion of the Soviet Union and thus the Byelorussian SSR. The policy of Lebensraum was implemented in Belarus. Thousands of Byelorussian towns and settlements were destroyed. Countless Byelorussians died at the hands of the nazis.
