What happened to Ukraine during WW II? The Second World War in Ukraine began on the 22nd of June 1941 when the nazis launched Operation Barbarossa. It was the name for the full scale German invasion of the Soviet Union. Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union. As soon as the nazi invasion of Ukraine began the Soviet secret service (NKVD) massacred tens of thousands of political prisoners that were locked op in the western regions. The regions were annexed by the Soviet Union after the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939. After the Battle of Kiev that summer over 300.000 Red Army soldiers were taken POW by the German Army. Meanwhile Jews were slaughtered by the SS Einsatzgruppen. The Holocaust by Bullets had begun. The Babi Yar Massacre near Kiev was just one example of the Holocaust in Ukraine. After the Germans lost at Stalingrad they had to retreat and applied a scorched-earth policy in Ukraine. With the Dnieper–Carpathian Offensive the nazis were expelled from Ukraine.
