After the Iranian Revolution (1978 - 1979) Ruhollah Khomeini became the Supreme Leader of Iran. Shortly after the Iran-Iraq War (1980 - 1988) broke out. Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein wanted to subdue Iran before the revolution would spread to his country. Iraq invaded Iran in 1980. The Iraqi troops got stuck and the war became a stalemate with trenches that reminded the world of the First World War. Iraq used poison gas. Iran mobilized countless child soldiers to fight in this holy war. This war is also known as the First Gulf War.
