The Greek Provisional Government of National Defence was set up in Thessaloniki by Eleftherios Venizelos during the National Defence coup d'état. This was part of the Greek National Schism. The National Schism was caused by neutralists (led by pro-German king Constantine) and pro-Entente politicians led by Eleftherios Venizelos who believed in the Greek Grand Idea (Megali Idea). He would set up an alternative government in Salonika (Thessaloniki) named the Provisional Government of National Defence. The Greek Army would fight against the Central Powers in 1917 on the Macedonian Front (Salonika Front).
