YouTube Description
as posted by the channelKönigsberg, located in East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia), was a heavily fortified German city. A city the Soviets besieged in January 1945. The battle was part of the larger East Prussian Offensive. In August 1944 the British bombed the city (in which thousands died) and the battle began in January, 1945, with Soviet forces encircling and besieging the city. The Germans, led by General Otto Lasch, put up a determined defense, but they were gradually overwhelmed by the superior numbers and firepower of the Soviet forces. After weeks of heavy fighting and bombardment, the Soviet forces captured Königsberg on April 9, 1945. The Soviets claimed 42,000 German dead and 84,000 POWs during the siege and campaign. How many Soviet soldiers died is not known. The city of Königsberg was later renamed Kaliningrad, and the region became part of the Soviet Union after the war.
