as posted by the channelThe People's Republic of South Yemen, officially known as the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, was a Marxist-Leninist state located in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula. It emerged in 1967 after gaining independence from British colonial rule and lasted until its unification with North Yemen in 1990. South Yemen was the only communist state in the Middle East during its existence.
The government of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen was led by the Yemeni Socialist Party (YSP), and it pursued socialist and Marxist-Leninist policies. The country received support from the Soviet Union and aligned itself with the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. The political landscape was characterized by a single-party system, with the YSP maintaining control over political and economic institutions.
The unification of North and South Yemen in 1990 formed the Republic of Yemen, bringing an end to the existence of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen and its unique status as the sole communist state in the Middle East.
