as posted by the channelThe German WW1 infantry uniform evolved during the First World War. In general infantry soldiers had brown leather boots and field grey tunics and trousers. Do notice the red piping. Striking was their spiked helmet, known as the Pickelhaube which was made of leather and was not suitable for modern warfare. During 1916 it was replaced with the M1916 Stahlhelm.
Over the course of the war the brown leather changed to black. The boots remained in use although low ankle boots with puttees were also allowed. These were mandatory for the stormtroopers (stosstruppe) that were established to break the stalemate on the Western Front.
The soldiers were equiped with a Gewehr M1898 Mauser Rifle and the M1898/05 bayonet, nicknamed the Butcher Blade which had replaced the much longer and fragile S98 bayonet. Due to shortages the ersatz (or replacement) bayonets were introduced which in general were much shorter. And the gasmask was introduced because of the use of poison gas on the front.
