as posted by the channel

After World War I and the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, Istanbul (formerly Constantinople) underwent almost five years of occupation by British, French, and Italian forces, to implement the terms of the Treaty of Sèvres in 1920. The city held a strategic importance.

The city faced an uncertain future. Istanbul experienced political, social, and cultural upheaval during this period. Residents engaged in mass demonstrations, strikes for better conditions, raids on officials, and clashes between Allied servicemen and civilians. The uniqueness of this era lay in the diverse individuals and groups converging in the occupied city, adding to its already multicultural population.

The occupation lasted until 1923 when the Republic of Turkey, led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, emerged victorious in the Turkish War of Independence. The subsequent Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 replaced the Treaty of Sèvres, leading to the establishment of modern Turkey and the withdrawal of Allied forces from Istanbul, marking the end of foreign occupation in the region.
