as posted by the channelThe current Chinese flag reflects the communist ideology of its government when the People's Republic of China was proclaimed in 1949. China had seen different flags in previous decades.
Till 1912 the Qing Dynasty ruled over China and they had this traditional flag, known as the Yellow Dragon Flag. After the 1911 revolution (also known as the Xinhai Revolution) this flag was adopted till 1928. The different colours reflect the different people groups in the country. From 1928 the flag of the Nationalist Government was introduced (which is the current Taiwanese flag).
When the People's Republic of China was proclaimed there were many different flag proposals as you can see here. This flag was chosen. The red represents the Chinese Communist Revolution and the five stars and their relationships to each other represent the unity of the Chinese people under the Chinese Communist Party.
I also wanted to point out the two Special Administrative Regions: Hong Kong and Macau that have their distinct flags. For now.
