1:00Now PlayingThe Fatherland Front was a right-wing authoritarian political organization in Austria during the 1930s. Founded by Engelbert Dollfuss in 1933, it represented a form of Austrofascism, seeking to establish a corporatist and authoritarian state. The Fatherland Front aimed to preserve Austria's independence and identity while suppressing opposition. It promoted authoritarian governance and collaborated closely with the Catholic Church. Dollfuss's regime was known for its authoritarian tendencies, censorship, and suppression of political opposition, particularly from socialist and communist groups. The Fatherland Front's rule was cut short when Dollfuss was assassinated in a failed Nazi coup attempt in 1934. His successor, Kurt Schuschnigg, continued the organization's policies. Ultimately, in 1938, Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany, bringing an end to the Fatherland Front's influence. Schuschnigg was imprisoned by the Nazis throughout the war. He moved to the United States after WW2 was over.
