0:48Now PlayingThroughout its turbulant history Greece saw different flags. The Revolution Flag. During the Greek War of Independence (1821), various army units used diverse flags: the cross, symbolizing Orthodox Christianity. The Republic Flag. In 1822, the First National Assembly of Greece established a universal blue and white flag. The flag underwent alterations reflecting political changes. The Monarchy Flag. When Greece became a kingdom in 1832 (and again in 1935) the same flag was used, but a golden crown was placed in the middle. The Junta Flag. In April 1967, a group of colonels overthrew the Greek government. They would adopt this flag with a notable darker shade of blue. And Today's Flag! Lastly, after Greece became a democracy they adopted this flag which is the current flag. Do notice that this design was already in use since the Greek War of Independence.
