The North Macedonian flag underwent a significant change due to the resolution of the name dispute with Greece. Formerly bearing the Vergina Sun—a symbol associated with ancient Macedonia—it was replaced in 1995 with a red field featuring a yellow sun with eight rays. This alteration was part of a compromise to ease tensions with Greece, which objected to the use of the Vergina Sun, considering it a Hellenic symbol. The change accompanied the adoption of the name "North Macedonia" in 2019, resolving a longstanding diplomatic issue. The new flag reflects the nation's commitment to diplomacy and peaceful resolution of disputes, marking a pivotal moment in its quest for international recognition and acceptance.
