15:15Now PlayingLa Violencia was a brutal civil war in Colombia, lasting from 1948 to 1958, and primarily involved the Colombian Conservative Party and the Colombian Liberal Party. This conflict erupted following the assassination of Liberal leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán on April 9, 1948, an event known as El Bogotazo, which triggered widespread riots and violence. The war was mainly fought in rural areas, where partisan allegiances were strong, leading to intense and localized battles.
The violence between the Conservative and Liberal factions resulted in severe social and economic disruptions. Rural communities bore the brunt of the conflict, suffering from massacres, forced displacements, and destruction of property. Conservative and Liberal paramilitary groups engaged in brutal tactics and other forms of terror to assert control and intimidate opposition. The civilian population was often caught in the crossfire, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
La Violencia resulted in the deaths of an estimated 200,000 people and displaced many more. It left deep scars on Colombian society and set the stage for future conflicts, including the rise of guerrilla movements and drug cartels. The National Front agreement in 1958, which mandated power-sharing between the two parties, eventually brought an end to the hostilities but did not completely resolve the underlying issues of political and social inequality.
