0:54Now PlayingThe Dutch part of Borneo was one of the first areas of the Dutch East Indies that was attacked by the Japanese imperial army.
The city of Tarakan endured airstrikes at the end of December. The Japanese landing occured in 11 January 1942. During the night the Japanese penatrated the Dutch lines. The Japanese executed 215 Allied prisoners-of-war in retaliation for their resistance.
Two weeks later Balikpapan was attacked. The Japanese were keen on capturing the oil installations intact. Dutch inflicted damage on these targets resulted in the murdering of 78 Dutch POWs and civilians by the Japanese.
Bandjermasin (in the south of Borneo) was attacked by the Japanese overland. The Japanese weren't hindered by Allied resistance, but more by malaria mosquitos.
Singkawang, (west of Dutch Borneo) was also attacked overland. A second force landed at four locations on the west coast. Some Allied units retreated in the jungle to conduct a guerrilla warfare but didn't hold out for long.
