as posted by the channelWhy was Bolivia IMPORTANT in WW2? Due to the outbreak of World War II Bolivia and the United States got closer than ever before. At the end of 1940 the US signed a 5-year tin contract with Bolivian producers to buy 18,000 tons annually at a fixed price, which was actually quite low. Did you know that in 1938 mining baron Moritz Hochschield persuaded then President Bush to allow the admittance of Jewish refugees escaping Nazi persecution in Europe. The Bolivians nationalized their German-ran airline and with US assistance they could improve communication and transportation facilities and could expand and diversify agricultural productions, stimulate mining and stabilize the currency. And as a result North American dollars began to flow into Bolivia for highway projects and a public health program in the rubber and quinine zones. In April 1943 vice president Henry Wallace visited Bolivia and while being in La Paz his host declared war on the Axis powers.
