Breslau (modern-day Wrocław in Poland) faced a prolonged and brutal siege. The city, strategically located on the Oder River, was fiercely defended by German forces under General Hermann Niehoff against the encroaching Red Army. The Nazis deliberately destroyed large parts of the city to keep Soviet troops at bay and for the construction of an air strip that was vital in supplying the besieged garrisson.
The siege witnessed intense urban warfare, with both sides enduring significant casualties. Civilians trapped within the city endured severe hardships, as the battle raged through the streets, squares, and buildings. Despite the overwhelming Soviet onslaught, the Germans resisted tenaciously. Ultimately, Breslau fell to the Red Army, several days after the Reich's capital Berlin had fallen. The siege had claimed thousands of lives and the city sustained significant damage.
