The military situation looked very bad for Britain: its powerful ally France had fallen quickly and the British forces on mainland Europe were defeated. The reason Britain did not sue for peace with Germany primarily due to the steadfast leadership of Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a determination to resist Nazi aggression. Churchill's resolve and powerful oratory inspired national unity and resilience as he didn't believe in signing a treaty with Hitler. Wait for the German economy to collapse (just like in WW1) or Germany to go to war with the USSR seemed to be the best option. And by staying in the war the British hoped to get support from the US eventually. This plan played out well as Germany invaded the USSR and Japan attacked the US bringing the country into the war at the side of Britain.
