Italy suffered heavy casualties in World War I due to several factors. Firstly, the Italian Front, primarily located in the challenging Alpine terrain, posed significant logistical and operational difficulties. The harsh weather conditions and mountainous landscapes made combat grueling.

Secondly, Italian military leadership under General Luigi Cadorna was often criticized for its rigid and aggressive strategies, which led to repeated frontal assaults against well-entrenched Austrian positions. These tactics resulted in high casualty rates without significant territorial gains. Additionally, Italy faced a well-prepared Austro-Hungarian defense bolstered by German support. The battles of the Isonzo, in particular, were marked by high casualties.

Moreover, Italy's late entry into the war meant it had to catch up in terms of military preparedness. Facing shortages in equipment and supplies, these factors contributed to the heavy Italian losses in the conflict, despite being 'victorious' at the end. Italy suffered 600,000 deadly casualties and the Italians spoke of a 'mutilated victory'.
